What is Gatorade?
If you haven’t heard of Gatorade before, you really must be living under a rock. Gatorade is a popular brand of sports drink (though some other food and drink items are also sold under the name) that is currently made by PepsiCo. It is currently distributed and sold in over 80 countries around the world. The original Gatorade is deigned to be the best product available to quench a person’s thirst. It is even touted by some people as being a better thirst quencher than water. The reason some people say this is based on it’s composition. Original Gatorade is based on oral rehydration therapy, which is essentially a mixture of salt, sugar, and water. This is designed to fight dehydration. Gatorade uses this basic theory and adds citrus based flavoring in addition to other ingredients such as food coloring, sweeteners, and other natural flavors. In addition to the science behind it’s original drink, Gatorade is doing constant research and development in its research facility “The Gatorade Sports Science Institute” (GSSI) located in Barrington, IL that is sometimes featured in their commercials.
History of Gatorade
Gatorade all started from a simple problem at the University of Florida. It was developed by a team of researchers at the university after the Florida Gator’s assistant coach Ray Graves asked for something that would better hydrate his players as they worked out and played football in the hot weather. The team of researchers including Alejandro de Quesada, Harry James Free, Dana Shires, and Robert Cade developed the formula for the original sports drink and tested it out on the players. The test was successful and the Gators claimed the drink was the reason they won their first Orange Bowl over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in 1967. That’s when Gatorade started getting traction within the sports community. A little while later, Robert Cade signed with Stokely-Van Camp, Inc with the rights to sell Gatorade. It was also made the official sports drink of the National Football League (NFL). Stokely-Van Camp, Inc was eventually sold to The Quaker Oats Company for $220 million in 1983. However, in 2011 PepsiCo acquired The Quaker Oats Company and therefore Gatorade for a $13 billion. Gatorade was rebranded and gained even more popularity. PepsiCo turned Gatorade into the drink we all know and love today.
